Easter Bunny Bag Tutorial

Click on this tutorial on YouTube for the video version. But all the written details are found on this blog so make sure to come back!

For one bag, you would need:

1 rectangular fabric for bag (main bag) 17 x 25 cm. Draw inside this rectangle the following: seam allowance is 1 cm all over, except on top which has 3 cm.

1 rectangular fabric for lining 17 x 25 cm also. (i choose a contrast colored same fabric, you could choose cotton linen or jersey scraps that you have)

1/4 meter of fabric for the ears and the smaller bunny

Infusable interfacing (about 1/8 meter, just enough for the ears) – I prefer the ones they use for cuffs and collar.

Print-out of all the animals: Bunny ears and Smaller Bunny (the other bunny is for another tutorial). You can print from online or follow THIS tutorial. Size them based on your bag before printing.

Ribbons for the bag in dots or checkered as they look cute with florals.

A4 size print-out of the animal prints. See tutorial linked below.
Cut these out

Cut once per fabric print. (I plan to just have one side of the bag with bunny print, you can cut one more if you plan to sew it on both sides.
For the bunny ears, iron the fusible interfacing on one side of the fabric.
Fold them so that the right sides are facing.

Place the ears on the fabric and with a pencil or fabric pencil, draw around them. Then sew on top of these lines thus sewing the two fabrics together.

View from the interfaced side

Cut around the lines, maybe 0.5 cm and a bit off the tip. Turn it right side over and make sure the ends of the ears look sharp. Iron them in place.

Draw a line, 3 cm from the top. Place the bunny a bit higher, you would see from pictures later that I placed them too low for the first bag. For the bottom corners, I cut out 2cm by 2cm approximately so that i have rounded corners. You could skip cutting them if you want your bag to just be flat and pointed at the ends.

Sew the bunny on top of the bag. I don’t think I have a picture for that. But you could see the illustration below.

Align the two fabrics right side facing right side. Sew two pieces of different fabrics (body + lining) together on the sides, starting from the 3 cm mark we had earlier, all the way to the top of the fabric then back to the sides again.
In this picture you should now have the body and lining of the bag together.

Do this for the other side of the bag.

Then pin the same fabric (body to body) and (lining to lining) and sew them at the sides. See picture below:

This is how it should look like. Mine was caught up on the right side. I had to redo this.

Then sew the corners together for both bags but leave one of the sides open so that you could still pull out the rest of the bag right side out. Once finished, stitch this bottom part close.

Sewing the corners (skip this step if you want the bag to be just rectangular). Join A and B their right sides facing. And sew then together. This wil give you the pinched effect on your bag.
For one side of the bag, fold it inwards (or outwards if you want to get the inner print out) to make a funnel for the ribbon. Remember though, on one side, to attach the bunny ears as you sew the lower stitch. Then secure them in place with the upper stitch.
The bags when finished. I did the brown one first, which is why the bunny was lower, i made adjustments for the second bag.
Using an emergency clip, thread your ribbon across this funnel. I suggest starting at the side where the ears are, as that’s the trickiest part. Note: You need to thread another ribbon on the opposite direction as you are doing now.

This is one side done of the ribbon done. Now add the other one, going on the opposite direction. There should be two straps in total that we could pull to synch close the bag.
so now one end has this loop.

Another end has the loose ends. Tie them up a knot and trim. So that it doesn’t go through the bag when you thread the other strap.

Et voila! Finished!

The two bags 🙂 I think it’s best to do two of each project so you get to practice. 🙂
