Today, I finally gave in and bought an overlock machine. In French, we say “surjeuteuse.” It’s almost a year after I bought a sewing machine. While I do agree that zigzagging the edges would keep the clothes from fraying. And yes I used washing machine to wash the clothes I’ve sewn and nothing frayed. But it’s just not as professional looking had it been overlocked.
Plus, have you tried using an overlock machine? My gosh, it’s so therapeutic. I love it! I love that part more than sewing or cutting up the fabrics to be honest.
I got mine from Auchan in Quatre Temps in La Defense (Metro Line 1, La Defense or RER A La Defense). When you get out of the Metro, Look for Quatre Temps then look for Auchan. I got mine around 100 euros. I wanted the other brand, but by the time I went there, this is the one that’s available. By the way, bring a car, or bring someone to help you carry this. It’s NOT light! It’s ok, I live a few stations away but seriously my arm hurts like crazy after.
If I get more sewing projects later on, I’m eyeing on a Brother overlock machine. I hope they see this post and just give me one. 🙂 Paging #brotherparis
By the way, if you’re worried about threading the whole thing, it’s not that bad. It would take maybe 2 or 3 times of looking at the chart, which is drawn on the machine itself but you’ll memorize it soon enough. I also love that I could match the thread colors to the fabrics, and not just stick to black or white. Ok maybe that’s just me. 🙂
These are the baby dresses I made and I used the overlock machine on it. Even if it doesn’t fray, it looks way better with the overlock.
