Pere Lachaise Cemetery/Cimètiere du Père Lachaise

Of all the places I’ve been to in Paris, this is probably one of the most unique ones. I went there during autumn, which makes it a nice walk. I think summer would not be ideal.

If you want to visit, it is on the 20th “arrondisement” or district of Paris. 16 Rue du Repos (eternal repos if I may say so). You could take Metro Line 3 and go down on Gambetta station and walk from there.

Some famous people’s tombstones are here and one of them is Oscar Wilde. It was Jacob Epstein who designed his tomb in a period of several months amidst some controversies. A lot of people argued as to which work of Wilde should the design of his monument be based on, The Sphinx or The Young King. You might wonder why there is such a glass covering around it.

Unfortunately, when I took this picture, the glass merely reflected the surroundings. It has a missing part. Some people stole it. Well, I don’t know how you go about bragging you have a chip of Oscar Wilde’s tomb.

Another interesting tomb in this cemetery. I’m sorry but it is probably a few blocks from Wilde’s and I forgot the exact location. You’d have to search it yourself if you’re interested. Well, you can’t miss it due to its appearance.

Ok so this man’s tomb is quite superstitious. They said that anyone touching it would be able to get pregnant. It seems more than one people believed it. Notice which ones are different in color. They said the color changed due to frequent touching. That’s a little trivia for you. Don’t quote me on it…I just heard it from a local. 🙂
